Professional Articulation, Language, and Speech Therapy Services for Kids in Singapore

Research has proven that early intervention for children with developmental disabilities (including autism and speech and language delays) can yield significant improvements in cognitive, academic, and social outcomes. Dedicated to offering the right treatment approach, I will help your child build confidence in communicating well with family and friends, and live a happy life.

Fluency in speech is essential for clear and effective communication. This is achieved through targeted exercises that help children develop smoother speech patterns by reducing instances of stuttering, ultimately leading to increased self-esteem and better social interactions.

A comprehensive approach to speech therapy includes oral motor skills therapy. By focusing on the movement and coordination of the muscles involved in speech, such as those in the lips, tongue, and jaw, we support the development of more precise and controlled speech patterns. This aspect of oral motor skills therapy is crucial, especially for children with childhood apraxia of speech.

Understanding that every child's developmental journey is unique, my therapy support provides specialised support for late talkers. Delayed language development can be concerning for parents; my approach is to offer comprehensive assessments followed by tailored intervention strategies. These are designed to enrich a child’s general language skills and stimulate language development in a supportive, engaging environment.

A child's ability to express themselves verbally is fundamental to their development. The speech therapy sessions work towards expanding vocabulary, building sentence structures, remembering words, answering questions, and empowering children to convey their thoughts and needs effectively.

The speech therapy sessions are tailored to address a wide range of speech disorders, from simple articulation difficulties to more complex ones which might require oral-motor support. Working on specific sounds that a child may substitute, add, omit, or mispronounce, helps improve literacy skills, enhance the clarity of speech, and bolster confidence in their verbal interactions.

Speech therapy goes beyond articulation. It plays a crucial role in developing social skills (pragmatic skills), which are skills we use every day to communicate with others e.g. taking, and maintaining the topic of a conversation, and nonverbal communication (e.g. gestures, facial expressions, body language). The therapy support focuses on improving conversational skills, understanding social cues, and enhancing narrative skills (the ability to tell stories and describe events), helping children in social settings and building lasting relationships.

Comprehension is the cornerstone of communication. Through my language support sessions, I help children improve their ability to follow directions, understand questions and language they hear, and comprehend stories, which are vital skills for academic success and everyday interactions.

The active involvement of parents is pivotal in the progress of a child. I offer parents training to empower them with the tools and knowledge necessary to reinforce the skills acquired during therapy sessions. This training ensures that therapy continues beyond the sessions, as parents learn to create a supportive home environment that encourages consistent practice and application of communication strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the right age to start speech/language therapy?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the optimal age to begin speech therapy. Early intervention is often beneficial, so starting when you first notice difficulties is ideal. Many experts recommend starting therapy as soon as a delay or disorder is suspected, which can be as early as 18 months. However, children of all ages can benefit from speech and language therapy, as it is tailored to individual needs.
What can I expect in the first therapy session?
In the initial session, the therapist will typically conduct a comprehensive evaluation to assess your child’s specific needs. This will involve observing your child’s current abilities, using standardised or informal tests, discussing your concerns and goals, and creating a personalised plan for therapy. The aim is to establish a comfortable environment for your child to ensure future sessions are met with enthusiasm.
How long does it take to see improvements?
The timeline for seeing improvements varies widely among children and depends on the nature and severity of the delay or difficulty, as well as the frequency of therapy and practice at home. Some children show progress within a few months, while others may need therapy for longer periods. Consistent practice at home and in therapy sessions typically leads to more rapid improvements.
Can therapy help with school readiness?
Absolutely, both speech therapy and language therapy can play a pivotal role in preparing a child for school. Language therapy can enhance communication skills, vital for classroom learning and social interaction, while speech therapy can improve intelligibility in spontaneous talk and self-esteem. A skilled therapist can tailor sessions to target skills that support social interactions and academic performance (literacy skills).
